Ice Skating
The Park District offers ice skating instruction for beginners of all ages, from two to adults. Classes are divided up by skill but often spend blended time on the ice. These classes operate in 5-10 week sessions depending on the season. Free ice skate rentals included for participants. Helmets are required for beginner classes and highly recommended in subsequent levels.

Hruby Skate is intended for adult hockey players that have played at the college level or above.
This skate will have zero tollerance for aggressive and physical players. It is a no-contact, pick up style game that is intended only for fun not competition.
PDOP can, and will, suspend any players whom it deems are agressive/physical and a danger to the other players after first offense. This includes but is not limitied to slap shots, checking, foul language towards others, etc.

Whether your child is interested in figure skating, hockey, or just wants to learn to skate, this class is the perfect introduction to the fundamentals of skating.This class introduces marching across the ice, falling and standing up, snowplow stops, two-foot glides and exercises that build up and reinforce those skills.

Building on the skills introduced in Learn to Skate1, this course will teach forward swizzles, snowplow stops, two foot and one-foot glides, backwards wiggles and exercises that build up and reinforce those skills.

Ice Bears Academy focuses on age-appropriate curriculum to develop and sharpen their skills needed to succeed at the travel hockey level. This includes skill sessions, cross-ice games, and a 30-minute classroom session on travel hockey and to prepare for the Ice Bears.

This class introduces fundamental hockey techniques and skills. No experience is required. Tuesday classes focus on skating, passing, puck handling, and shooting. Learn edgework, puck protection, and wrist shots. Full equipment is required, and free gear rental is available.

Geared towards novice players, each week will feature coach-led drills designed to improve players’ ability in skating, stick & puck work, and positional hockey. In this course your child will build on the skills they’ve already learned while adding more advanced skating, shooting, passing, and stick-handling techniques. This course prepares your child to enter the Ice Bears Academy. Prerequisites: Hockey 101

PROGRAM DETAIL
This class follows the Adult Hockey Beginner curriculum. No experience is required. Meet new people or join with friends and spend your Sunday mornings on the ice! Equipment required: skates (rental available), shin pads, hockey pants, elbow pads, gloves, helmet, and stick (shoulder pads recommended).

Your child will learn the fundamental skating and stick skills for hockey such as c-cuts, stops, glide turns, passing, shooting, and puck handling. This class lays the foundation for Hockey 201 while building confidence and competence to have fun and compete!

In this course your child will build on the skills they’ve already learned while adding more advanced skating, shooting, passing, and stick-handling techniques. This in-house recreational hockey program offers a chance to play in a fun and friendly atmosphere. Games consist of three 20-minute running clock periods with a referee. In addition to AHAI/USAHockey Rules, the program does not allow checking or slap shots and has a zero tolerance policy for unsportsmanlike conduct. Participants should have experience playing hockey at the high school level or higher due to speed of the games. Sign-ups for the league are done on an individual basis. The league reserves the right to move players around teams to ensure balance and quality of the program. Full equipment is required. Players will receive a jersey.

Synchronized Skating Team
The Park District of Oak Park is home to the Synchronized Skating Team, Infinite Style. Skaters level Freeskate 1 and above can give synchronized skating a try! Click the button below to learn more.
Skate Showcases
Two skater showcases are scheduled each year to highlight skaters’ abilities.
The Holiday Exhibition takes place in December and highlights intermediate to advanced skaters.
The Ice Show takes place in March and all skating levels are welcome to participate. This is a separate event in which skaters register to participate, are grouped with those at the same skating level, and learn a choreographed routine with costumes, spotlights, and an audience! More information about these programs is available in the Fall and Winter.
Skate Practice and Freestyle Ice
Skate School Practice is a great option for skaters of all ages to practice their skills. Skaters must be enrolled in the current Skate Academy Session and preregister for the time. Fees apply.
Freestyle Ice is open to skaters in the Skate Academy program looking for additional time to practice their skills individually or with a coach. Skaters Pre-Freeskate and below must be accompanied by a coach at all times.

Note
A rink membership grants free access to public skate times and rink special events, but is not required to sign up or participate in skating classes, special rink events, or public skate.

The Park District of Oak Park Skate Academy is a member of the Greater Chicagoland Basic Skills Committee. Membership in this committee will bring more opportunities for our skaters to be involved in the wider figure skating community. Opportunities approaching include Skate America, Disney on Ice, coaching seminars, and scout programs.

Your child will remain enrolled in Snowplow classes until the end of the session. They will transition to Basic classes the following session.
