Description
The Gymnastics and Recreation Center offers instructional programs that provide an opportunity for children of all ages to enjoy gymnastics from preschool programs to competitive levels. Comparable to any private club, the GRC can meet the needs of any new or experienced gymnast. The gymnastics program serves an average of 1,400 students per season. View more information about the gymnastics programs offered by the Park District on the Gymnastics Programs page. In addition to gymnastics, the GRC offers two multi-purpose rooms on the second floor for birthday parties and dance and fitness classes.
History
The original Oak Park Gymnastics Center (OPGC) opened in 1988 when it became necessary to find a place to house the expanding tumbling programs that had grown among the community centers. From 1988 to 2013 the OPGC was located at 218 Madison. The Park District of Oak Park needed to relieve overcrowding at the District’s 218 Madison facility, which housed the District’s gymnastics center, buildings and grounds operations and administrative offices. In October 2011, the Park District purchased the former Aldi grocery store at 25 Lake Street for the relocation of the Oak Park Gymnastics Center. Construction began in October 2012. In October of 2013, the newly-named, 18,670 square foot Gymnastics and Recreation Center opened at 21 W. Lake Street.
